24. We’re Writing Again

AARON (35) LANDSCAPER is looking to push the story forward.
We left off just before the engagement scene. Aaron has a ring and a fun fact. Initially, I was thinking we’d jump right in and go straight for the proposal, but he bought that ring on his lunch break…
Let’s work it out.
I know you can’t see me right now, but I am GIGGLING. Not because of the content, that’s obviously horrifying, but because we went through and chopped up that first act, but still get use some of it in the new draft. That’s a good feeling.
AND finding the skull BEFORE he proposes, let’s us have a more frantic scene. Aaron’s getting thrown around.
It’s around this time I start to get a little bit nervous about whether or not we set up the world and characters enough before jumping into the story. In this case, I really don’t think we need to add too much more up top.
We’ve got the trivia post-it notes, Brooke makes his lunch, they do trivia nights, Aaron owns his landscaping business, his crew knew to get back to work without him. I think all of those things together tell us that this guy lived a pretty normal life.
We haven’t met Brooke yet, but we already seem to know a bit about her. She’s clearly charismatic if Tank was asking for her number. She loves Aaron — makes his lunches, leaves him little notes, he buys the best ring for her. So we can bring her in gentle.
Gentle, but memorable. She’s a big player, so she needs a presence.
Alright, I’m going to see what else I can salvage from the first go round.
Ok, there wasn’t too terribly much left to salvage from our previous writing.
I’m going to stop here simply because I know we will have some momentum when we come back. I have a pretty good idea of how the rest of the scene will go down.
Alright, a few things I like about this…
Brooke is suspicious already. Which gave us some character development for Aaron.
We’ve established that Brooke is a badass with computers and technology which will lead to her finding out about Fred Corbin. Maybe we can utilize her skills in other ways, too. We shall see.
We get a sense of normalcy. Spaghetti Fridays. It’s a little cliche, so we may mold that into something more interesting, but it’s a rough draft, so we’re just trying to get it done. I like that it appears that Brooke makes lunch and Aaron makes dinner. There’s a balance to that.
We’re making good progress.
