Why would I do this?

Let’s step out of the eye-grabbing, website copy for a moment and I’ll just talk to you.

One thing I wish I understood when I was in my twenties is just how long things take. When I first started screenwriting, I thought… A year or two tops. I’d be watching my debut feature in the theater by the time I was thirty. Ha. I’m still laughing at myself about that. I’ve come to realize it’s going to take the better part of a decade for anything to really come in the traditional way. And I’ve only been screenwriting since 2021.

So I sat myself down and had a long talk. What is it really going to take?

Everything. The answer is everything. Everything, all of it, mixed with luck and opportunity.

Ok, I told myself. I’ll do it. It’s ok if it’s hard. And it is hard…

But all I can do is write. All I want to do is write and make movies and play music and learn along the way. It’s time for me to come out of my hole and start showing people what I’ve been hiding out and working on. It’s all right here. Who I am and what I’ve done.

Obviously, there are some scripts that I must work on in the privacy of my own space. There are moments in this journey that are too dark to share/I’ll need to find more courage to talk about them. This lifestyle is not for the faint of heart. I am lucky enough to have a solid support system and the opportunity to keep pushing forward.

What I want to say is that this life is brutal, but in the current climate of everything that’s happening in the world - it’s not. It’s champagne problems. So I’m going to focus this only on people who are seriously thinking about becoming screenwriters - think about it. Think about it hard.

I’ll do my best to show you how it really is, but at the end of the day, there’s no way I could truly convey the sleepless nights, the emptiness, the loneliness, and the devastation that is a constant when your life is consumed by writing. Nor can I truly tell you the impact of losing friends, never seeing your family, or feeling like you live in a world completely separate from everything you once knew. In this world of chaos and uncertainty, art is important. Writing is important. But it’s not more important than taking care of yourself.

Listen… I want this site to be a spot for writers by writers. Stop by when you like, leave a comment or reach out if you like, check out the friends page to see more cool stuff. We’re all just trying to make something of ourselves. I’m approachable, don’t be shy about reaching out. I’ll help where I can.

The rest of these posts are going to be more focused on writing. Breaking down old scripts of mine and hopefully making them better. I’ve had some really awesome opportunities to talk with other screenwriters and badass people who have guided me through some of this, so I’d like to share what I’ve learned in that respect. Show you how I’ve adapted it to my own process and help others find their voice as well.

So just… enjoy. Take care of yourself. Take care of each other.

Love, Rocket
